Data & features

What are features in a market model, and why do they matter?

Features are the inputs a model learns from, and they decide the ceiling of what is possible.
What are features in a market model, and why do they matter?

A feature is a measured input

A feature is any value fed into a model, for example a return over a window, a volatility estimate, a volume ratio, or a sentiment score from text. The set of features defines what the model is even able to notice. If a useful signal is not represented in the features, no model can find it.

Feature engineering, the craft of designing these inputs, usually matters more than the choice of model. A thoughtful set of features with a simple model often beats a clever model with careless inputs.

Stationarity and why raw prices mislead

Raw price levels tend to drift, which confuses many models. Researchers usually transform prices into returns or other relative measures so the statistical properties stay more stable over time. Ignoring this is a common beginner mistake that produces results that look good and generalize poorly.

The danger of too many features

Adding many features increases the chance that some will appear predictive purely by luck. With enough inputs a model can fit noise perfectly and fail completely on new data. Restraint, and honest testing on untouched data, are the defense.

Common questions

What makes a good feature?
One that is grounded in a real mechanism, stable over time, and available at the moment a decision would be made. Features computed with future information are a frequent and serious error.
Do more features improve accuracy?
Often the opposite. More features raise the risk of fitting noise. Careful selection and honest out-of-sample testing matter far more than quantity.
